There are several ways that you can help Home-Start Sittingbourne & Sheppey in a voluntary capacity:

by supporting a family as a volunteer mentor
by joining the Board of Trustees
by helping us with fundraising

Home-Start Sittingbourne & Sheppey’s volunteer mentors come from many different backgrounds and vary in age but all are either parents themselves or have parenting experience and are carefully selected for their friendliness and understanding. All volunteer mentors attend a induction course before being matched with a family (subject to references and an enhanced DBS check). They then take their own individual skills and experience to the families they visit. Our volunteer mentors offer their time and accept a parent for who they are.

Volunteer Mentors Induction Course

All volunteer mentors are required to complete the course of preparation prior to being matched with a family. This course is designed to prepare volunteers to be able to meet the needs of the family they are matched with. Training will cover topics such as; their role as volunteer, values & attitudes, equity & diversity, confidentiality and safeguarding. Training is completed online as an e-learning course, giving volunteers the chance to work at their own pace in their own home. The course is followed by an end of course interview to wrap up the volunteers learning. The end of course interview enables the Manager to get to know volunteers, so that she can match the right family to the right volunteer mentor.

Volunteer Trustees

The Home-Start Sittingbourne & Sheppey’s Board of Trustees is made up of local people from a wide range of backgrounds such as law, social care, HR, fundraising, education and business. The main requirements of a trustee are a real interest in the family support work we undertake and a willingness to be involved and active in the running of the charity. The Board ensures correct governance and is responsible for the financial security of the organisation.
